Refinishing

How we brought a weathered deck back

The deck in these photos had gone gray, and its stairs had cracked treads and moss buildup. Here’s what we did, in order:

Wash

Pressure washed the boards to take off years of gray buildup, then let the wood dry.
Sand

Sanded the deck floor back to bright, bare wood so the stain could soak in evenly.
Stain

Finished the deck, railings and stairs in a rich penetrating stain, and stained the backyard pergola to match.

Repairs

Sound boards, stairs and railings first

A new finish only looks good on a deck that’s solid underneath. We repair decks and stairs, and repair or install railings. On one porch we repaired and reinstalled a clean white railing and refinished the steps for a safe, fresh entrance.

We also take on bigger outdoor projects. We’ve enclosed a deck with clear vinyl weather panels, built a louvered pergola and a cedar patio pavilion, and put up a cedar privacy fence. See them in our project gallery.

Deck Repair questions

Can you refinish an old gray deck?

Yes. We pressure wash off the gray buildup, sand the boards back to bare wood and finish the deck, railings and stairs in a penetrating stain. The photos on this page show one of those jobs.

Do you repair deck stairs and railings?

Yes. Deck and stair repair and railing repair and installation are part of our exterior work. On one porch we rebuilt the railing and refinished the steps.

Can you stain a pergola to match the deck?

Yes. On the deck refinish shown here, we stained the backyard pergola from posts to rafters to match the deck.
